     Norfolk Wherry Pictures

Back to Boardman Index

These pictures are from Chris Boardman's Albums.

In Chris' time, the Norfolk Wherry was a familiar sight on the Broads and Chris' camera captured many of them. These are really scenes from a bygone age now and only a few preserved wherries remain on the Broads today. We hope you like this collection of pictures.

John Hopthrow has sent us the following information about the above picture of Dragon:

My Father Brig. Harry Hopthrow owned Dragon from 1950 to 1959 and we used to live on her for 2 months in the Summer School Holidays.
The picture (above) is of one of the 2 trips we took with the Bishop of Norwich Rt Rev Herbert and his wife plus the Archdeacon Micklejohn (who had been Chaplain on HMS Warspite at the Battle of Jutland) to St Benets Abbey. The tall man in a cassock is the Bishop and I am just near the Mast wearing a white Sun Hat. The two on the winch are: on left, the Actor John Glyn-Jones [ he was Mr Grouser in BBC Children’s hour Toytown with Larry the Lamb] and the other is Mr Cartmel who was on my Father's Staff at ICI.
We kept Dragon at Barton and frequently went through Ludham Bridge, in fact this was the nearest piped water and Petrol. The petrol was hand pumped into the Wherry.

We don't have a lot of information about the wherries in these pictures. If you know anything, please let us know. Just go back to our home page and send us an e-mail.
