Here is some family
information kindly supplied by Robert E Smith from Grand
Rapids, Michigan, USA
George A Smith—My Great grandfather was born 15 March 1850
in Martham Norfolk England and died 15 May 1930 in Grand
Rapids, Kent, Michigan. He married Jane Eddy on May 24 May
1869 in Yarmouth. He immigrated to The USA and arrived in
New York on 25 October 1869. His wife Jane
immigrated one year later in 1870 and they settled in
Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan. She died in 1918. He was a
tailor. At the age of 11 he was living with his
grandfather, George Smith, and is listed in the 1861
England Census as an aid to a tailor. His
grandfather was a tailor and lived in Ludham. Both
his father, William, and grandfather, George, were born in
Ludham. His grandfather was born about 1793 in
Ludham.
In the 1880-81 Grand Rapids City Directory my great
grandfather is listed as a tailor employed by Houseman and
May. I wonder if this company recruited immigrants because
his immigration in 1869 was just four years after the
Civil War.
The Ludham Archive thinks there may be some
connection with the Davey Family, also from Ludham who
also emigrated to Grand Rapids in the same year as George
Smith.
